Homesick Blues

I’m not going to say I know how you feel, because we all experience home sickness differently. But you will get over it my loves. You will.

I’ve experienced homesickness and I dealt with it. I’ve experienced being homesick in 2 different scenarios, my time at university and my current time as a consultant. Being in an unfamiliar place with less familiar people is daunting. You have every right to feel out of your comfort zone. But you know what, you’ll be fine. It’s a learning curve we all must face at one point in our lives.

I didn’t get homesick too much during university because I knew people there but whilst being away for work I have definitely felt the woes. I was living in a different city, staying in a hotel and had no one to talk to, initially. However, I began to see the positives in my environment. I had more time to myself, could learn about some history of the city, could meet new people and try new restaurants! Lol the food was the best part.

These are my top 5 tips that helped me get through my homesickness maze.

1.  Embrace your independence, this is your show and you are the leading lady or lad. Be the pioneer of how you dress, walk, smile, talk etc. Reintroduce yourself to who you are.

2. Discover your passion. Following on from point 1. You may find something you didn't know you loved! Give it a go

3. Girl get your life and get off that social media! Sometimes just get out of your dorm room/ hotel room and meet with friends, go to an event, catch a movie or go for a walk. Be adventurous!

4. When you've taken one day or two away from social media. Go back on it and connect with friends, talk over the phone to family, tell them the new and exciting things you're doing. Not too much though, no parent wants to hear that all you're doing is party, party and more partying lol. As if tuition fees grow on trees.

5. Sign up to social societies, committee's, sport teams, bar tending, volunteer at events and charities! I wish I did more of this at university, I really do. So take full advantage of your time away from home and just live life. Life is too short to let the days past.

Be you and Be true to who you are.
