A few posts ago I talked about making informed decisions. I feel like it's better that I go into more depth of decisions I've made in my life up until this point. Hopefully it'll help.
Before asking your mentors or parents, first ask yourself do you need to go to university? If you don't go to university, what will you be doing? In 5 years where do you see yourself? What course will you be studying and why? What else can you do to get to where you want to be? Do you need training or a apprenticeship? Your goals and aspirations have to be reflected into your course of action. If you want to pursue construction, may apprenticeships would be better than a degree? You need to find out and become informed.
Many of us face or have faced the question, should I go to university?
What you do today will impact your tomorrow.
My personal experience was I did go to University. Being honest, I didn't have an academic plan, I was always thinking of music and being an entrepreneur. That was it. Computer science was the last thing on my mind lol.
Saying that I still went because I didn't have a plan if I decided not to go and I'm a planner, if I don't have the details of my plan, at least the silhouette then I can't act on what it is I would like to do. Anyway, I went and I do not regret going at all! I was actually good at what I did and I could still work on my other projects. I also had a great experience and came out with great people in my life, more independence and self worth.
Although this worked for me, it may not work for you.
If you really are unsure after outweighing your options, you need to seek some guidance from someone you trust. A mentor, school counsellor, family member etc. But before going to them make sure you have your points gathered so you can articulate your questions and concerns well.
If you're at the crossroads and you've researched the degree you could possibly be studying, check out options for not going to university. Don't be like me and take the gamble, get informed!
